VISIT
THE MARBLE QUARRIES
La prima tappa della visita alle cave conduce a
Colonnata,
antichissimo borgo arroccato a 532 metri di altitudine fondato
dai Romani per alloggiare gli schiavi impegnati
nell'escavazione.
Le
cave del canale di Colonnata costituiscono il più imponente dei
bacini apuani e offrono una superba vista dei
"ravaneti", gli spettacolari accumuli di detriti di
marmo bianco adagiati sui fianchi dei monti Serrone Maggiore e
Spallone, alla sommità del quale si trova il bacino di Gioia:
un complesso di cave che offre un colpo d'occhio unico al
mondo.
Before

la visita a Colonnata ci si sposta al Bacino di Fantiscritti, il
bacino centrale delle cave dove sorgono imponenti cave e vedute
spettacolari sia della città di Carrara che delle cave; un
piccolo museo è stato costituito ai piedi del bacino e mostra
le antiche lavorazioni delle cave dai tempi più antichi con
tutti gli attrezzi per scavare e tagliare i blocchi dal monte e
per segare i blocchi in lastre fino al trasporto su pali di
legno.
