CARRARA AND SANT'ANDREA CATHEDRAL

Carrara has always been known as the "Capital of marble". It lies in a basin between the slopes of the hills in front of the Apuan Alps, and the sea. Carrara honours its past and present with splendid monuments among which Sant' Andrea's Cathedral shows the skilful work of extraction, transportation and workmanship of an everlasting material. It is thanks to marble that You can still find the expressive ability of a lot of artisans and artists, from the humble stone cutter to the genius of Michelangelo. The quarries, the sculptures and the working laboratories are well worth a visit. (Km 7)

THE APUAN ALPS, THE QUARRIES AND THE VILLAGES ALONG THE ANCIENT MARBLE TRAILS

The Apuan Alps are a mountainous chain that stands out , clear and majestic, from the rest of the Appennines. They make a magnificent frame to the town of Carrara. COLONNATA AND ITS "LARDO" (Salted pork fat)

Colonnata is an old village of Roman origin, located in the heart of the Apuan Alps, famous for its marble but also for the Lardo (Salted pork fat) which was the old quarrymen's meal. Today it is renown by gourmets all over the world. This excellent product which has the same white colour of Carrara marble is unique with its characteristic taste due to a long seasoning in marble basins, to the spices and sea salt, to the healthy mountain air and to a secret personal touch by the producers. (a 10 Km)

LUNI AND ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL ROMAN SITE

The Roman colony of "LUNA" was an important port and business centre for the marble quarried from the Apuan Alps and for local agricultural products. Nowadays visitors can admire the remains of the Amphitheatre, the Forum, the Theatre and what is left of its past splendour in the Museum of the archaeological area. (800 mt. walking distance)

THE MEDIOEVAL VILLAGES OF NICOLA, ORTONOVO, CASTELNUOVO MAGRA AND FOSDINOVO

On the hills overlooking the plain of Luni and where grapevines and olives are grown some ancient villages are met. Walking through their narrow winding lanes and admiring the majestic towers You can still perceive the medioeval charm of ancient deeds. Do not forget to taste the "Vermentino dei Colli di Luni" a wine produced for centuries on this land. This wine has been famous since it received the D.O.C. (Certificate of Controlled Origin). (Km.1.5 or more depending on the village)

THE "VAL DI MAGRA "

The valley of the Magra river from which its name derives, goes from the Appennines to the sea crossing the provinces of Massa Carrara and La Spezia, from "Lunigiana" to Bocca di Magra. (3 Km.) Sarzana, the gem of the Val di Magra, spreads in a plain north of Carrara. It is a must for those who love antiques. (3 Km. or more depending on the itinerary)

LUNIGIANA: WOODS" CASTLES AND STELE STATUES

Lunigiana is a land of chestnut tree woods and ancient villages. It was travelled by pilgrims and is part of the Via Francigena all scattered with castles and stones on which travellers engraved signs of their passage. The" Statue Stele" are a significant example. (About 25 Km. depending on the itinerary)
