MASSACIUCCOLI
You
can reach the small village named after the lake either by boat or by car.
It is both of naturalistic and historical
interest. There are remains of a roman Villa (II century B.C. – III century
A.C.) and a small museum nearby.
In the midst of olive trees You can admire
the ruins of Roman Thermae (Thermal baths) from a suggestive
panoramic spot.
Going up towards the “Pieve di San
Lorenzo”at a short distance you can enjoy the magnificent view of the
Roman Ruins,
the marsh canals of the lake of Massaciuccoli and the Tyrrhenian sea.
For
nature lovers this area is interesting as it is part of the “ Migliarino –
San Rossore – Massaciuccoli natural park “.

TORRE
DEL LAGO
Torre
del Lago is known to music lovers because Giacomo Puccini spent there most of
his life. You can visit his house and in the summer attend the Opera Season
dedicated to the well-known composer.
Nature lovers can find more about the lake
from guides and there is the possibility of hiring boats.
There are also boating courses for sport lovers.
IL
LAGO DI VAGLI
The
lake of Vagli is situated in the heart of the Apuan Alps. It is a huge
artificial basin created in 1947 with a dam stopping the flow of the river Edron.
To be able to create this basin a small
village named Fabbriche di Careggine, centre of iron works, had to disappear
completely under the water. Only occasionally the lake is emptied for
maintenance purposes, then
you
can see the ghostly structure of the village that keeps intact all its
characteristics.
